Kris graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design with a major in Environmental Design in 2002. She then went on to earn her Masters Degree in Design from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design at the University of Dundee in Scotland in 2004.
Shortly afterwards, Kris returned to Canada and relocated to the West Coast to embark on a professional career working as an Interior and then Industrial Designer. However, Kris sought to channel her creativity away from the office desk and on to the canvas; a dream she’d had since childhood. With an aspiration to combine her experience of design with art, lead a life that she is passionate about, and create work that makes people smile she began painting animals as her subject matter.
Inspiration for painting comes from an absolute love of animals and a lifetime of being surrounded by four-legged creatures that bark, hop, and purr. Kris’ contemporary style and graphic approach to painting developed through her design background with particular focus on color and composition. The graphic design influence comes through in the color-blocking nature and vector like style of her work, which takes the concept of the traditional dog portrait and brings it into modern day. With her studio tucked in amongst the Squamish Mountains Kris paints with bold acrylics on oversized canvases and seeks to do so in a way that captures the complete soul of the animal.
